Summary: Prepared by Samuel Crowther, this is the second edition (first was 1857) of the flrst work In the Igbo language, a member ofthe Niger-Congo family. lt includes the basic orthography, phonemes, dipthongs, etc., of the language, reading passages, numerals (ordinal and cardinal), translations from the scriptures (Luke and Psalms), the Ten Commandments, and the Lord's Prayer. Crowther was the first African Anglican bishop in Nigeria. A Yoruba, he was bom in Osogun and prior to conversion to Christianity was named Ajayi. Captured as a youth with his family by Muslim Fulani slavers, he and his family were freed before being transported out of Africa by English naval forces. Subsequently, he converted to Anglicanism and was educated by missionaries. A gifted linguist, he produced portions of the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer in Yoruba in addition to this lgbo religious primer, as well as a grammar and vocabulary in that language.
