Public Expulsion of Penitents from the Church on Ash Wednesday
A woodcut depicting the public expulsion of penitents from the community of the church on Ash Wednesday. The penitents, wearing hair shirts and carrying candles, are led out of the church by a bishop and his retinue. The scene is flanked by a pair of cherubs supporting fruit trees. The woodcut is reused throughout the work.
