Summary: As professor of Logic and Rhetoric at Ingolstadt, Eck had the duty of writing the theses his students defended as part of the requirement for obtaining their doctorates. This one on oaths and vows was written and defended in 1516. M. Kretz was the respondent. This is a very early example of a printed dissertation.Signatures: a-b4, c6, d-e4, f6, g-i4, k6, l4; [a] unsigned, ¿4b blank.Illustrative and Decorative Content: Elaborate coat of arms of G. Kungsperger by the "Petrarchameister" on title page; initials.Imprint: (Colophon) "...Sigismundus Grim[m] Medicus et Marcus Vuyrsung, Augustae in officina sua typis excuderunt. Anno ... M.D.XVIII"Additional Details: The Appendix includes a 12-line poem by U. Rhegius, and a longer poem in praise of Eck by A. Brassicanus. Originally presented as Mathias Kretz's theses under J. Eck's presidency in the Universität Ingolstadt, 1516. There is a former ownership mark at the head of the title page that is illegible but for the word "Bibliotheca," and an armorial bookplate on the verso with the words "Die von Messterhagen." There are bibliographical references as marginalia in the text.
